Although the design of any deck, patio cover, or structure is important, it is the way the deck is engineered that will determine longevity, future appearance and continual value. At Franklin & Sons, we are constantly educating ourselves in order to assure our methods meet the high standards expected by our clients:
All posts are submerged at least 24″ into the ground and set in concrete. No posts are further than 8′ apart from each other.
All joists are installed on 16″-centers and connected with either coated ring shank nails or screws depending upon installation option selected.
All balusters are installed no further than 4″ apart from each other.
All natural wood deck boards are rounded and smoothed for comfort and to reduce splintering.
All gates are built with four (4) steel “L”-shaped brackets to reinforce and maintain square.
A quality ground cloth is positioned and staked down underneath decks installed 12″ or higher. This permeable cloth allows rain and moisture to enter the earth but prevents weeds and grass from growing underneath elevated decks.
Materials Of Construction
Merging quality construction with superior materials ensures a project that will be enjoyed and endure for many years. Franklin & Sons uses superior materials in every project.
Every deck substructure begins by choosing the best quality lumber for outdoor construction. Franklin & Sons uses only Premium #2, KDAT (Kiln Dried After Treatment), Yellow Pine, in every decking substructure. This assures our customers will never have substructure warping due to uncontrolled drying of treated lumber.
Of course, we never rest when it comes to researching. We feel it is our responsibility to always provide the best for every project we undertake. From the concrete that sets our posts, to the highest quality woods and composites used for decking, steps, railing, patio covers, arbors and outdoor living environments, our research never ceases.
Franklin & Sons uses only the very best fasteners for our foundation structure, surface materials, rails and beams. Every deck, patio cover, arbor and/or other outdoor structure is fastened with specific screws coated for rust prevention and guaranteed for 40 years. For decks that incorporate premium materials such as second generation composites, premier hardwoods, thermally modified woods or redwoods, Franklin & Sons uses TrapEase® color-matched composite screws. The patented Deckmaster® hidden fastening system can also be used on selected decks. This system places all of the hardware connections underneath the deck board surface to provide a superior look and finish.
Wood And Composites
Over the years the materials we use have changed quite dramatically. We consider it our primary job to always have the best possible materials available for our clients and to diligently know every nuance regarding these materials.
Franklin & Sons uses EverGrain composites, thermally modified iron wood, cedar and exotic hardwoods. With one note, when a material is proven superior, we will always be the first to incorporate it into our work throughout Northeast Oklahoma.
